He is looking forward to continuing to make Dance Kaleidoscope programming more accessible to the Indianapolis community. In his first year in this role, he facilitated new partnerships with organizations such as Access Pass as part of the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, Eskenazi Health, Harrison Center for the Arts, and Anderson University. In 2016 he staged a full-length The Nutcracker at Dancers Studio Inc in Columbus, Indiana.Īs Director of Community Engagement, Stuart strives to continue integrating Dance Kaleidoscope’s artistic excellence in contemporary dance throughout the Indianapolis community. He has been on faculty at summer intensive programs for Water Street Dance Milwaukee, Mutual Dance Theatre, Dance Kaleidoscope, and Virginia School of the Arts. Stuart has been teaching ballet and modern disciplines across the country for over a decade. In addition to concert dance, Stuart has choreographed multiple theatre productions, including the Indiana premiere of Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame. His work has also been featured at numerous dance festivals including Regional Dance America Midstates and Ballet Alliance. He was the choreographer for the short film Dreaming of You(th), which premiered at the Indy Shorts International Film Festival in July 2023. Stuart’s choreographic work has been featured in concerts produced by Dance Kaleidoscope, Phoenix Rising Dance Company, Ballet Theatre of Indiana, Central Indiana Dance Ensemble, and Butler Ballet. He has performed repertory by dance pantheons such as Paul Taylor, Talley Beatty, Nacho Duato, Gustavo Ramirez Sansano, and Stephanie Martinez. Stuart has attended programs with Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Paul Taylor Dance Company, and Ballet West. Stuart spent nine years as a dancer with Dance Kaleidoscope under the direction of David Hochoy where he danced featured roles such as the Revivalist in Martha Graham’s Appalachian Spring and soloist roles in David Hochoy’s Carmina Burana, An American in Paris, and Magical Mystery Tour. While at Butler, Stuart was fortunate to study with teachers such as Susan McGuire, Marek Cholewa, Derek Reid, Patrick Hinson, and Cynthia Pratt. He graduated cum laude from Butler University with a BA in Dance, concentrating in pedagogy. Stuart Lewis began dancing in Lynchburg, Virginia as a student of Keith Lee and then at Virginia School of the Arts at the instruction of Adam Sage, Dominique Angel, Lisa Thomas, Tyrone Brooks, Martha Faesi, and Sonny Robinson. In Michigan she served as the Chair of the Jackson Public Arts Commission and on the boards of the Arts and Cultural Alliance, Business and Professional Women, the Jackson Symphony Guild and was a frequent panelist for the Michigan Arts and Culture Council.Īfter graduating from Valdosta State University with a BA in English, she worked in advertising and public relations, at the Americans for the Arts and then at the American Express Foundation in the international philanthropic department. Currently she serves on the Executive Board of the Indianapolis Consortium of Arts Administrators and is a member of the Indy Arts Council Equity Task Force. Gutfreund has been active in volunteer activities and has served on numerous boards. At the school of the arts, she managed a capital campaign to transform the historic Masonic Temple into a center for the arts, and when she arrived at Dance Kaleidoscope, with the Board and David Hochoy, completed the $2 million capital campaign to create an artistic home for the company. She positioned the organization as a leading provider of accessible arts education and developed a public-private partnership with the City of Jackson to relocate the organization downtown to support organizational growth and the city’s economic development. As executive director of the school of the arts for 16 years, Kim was a driving force behind the tremendous growth of the organization and the community’s arts and cultural sector. Kim has more than twenty-five years of nonprofit leadership experience, serving as executive director of Jackson School of the Arts in Michigan and as the founding executive director of Peter Sparling Dance Co. Kim Gutfreund joined Dance Kaleidoscope as Executive Director in June 2021.
